Metallographic description: Iron. The sample was mounted to reveal the top and bottom surfaces of the edge .The specimen goes from ferrite on the surface to ~.55% C. This could result from carburization or decarburization. Longitudinal inclusions (silicates from the dark gray color) are strung out in the same direction, showing that the piece was forged. There is little slag.
