Period Late Period

Alloy: high-tin bronze
Where Cut: cross section of shaft
How Mounted: lengthwise
Structure: Hot-worked and quenched.
Metallographic description: A beta or gamma tin martensite. The needles appear mostly on the edges. The major tubes of alpha are unidirectional longitudinally, but small bits of alpha shoot off in all directions in a pattern like Widmanstätten structure. Faint grain boundaries can be seen in the dark beta (or gamma?) matrix. A gamma matrix suggests, according to Goodway and Conklin (1989:14), that the metal was held at or above the quench temperature for a while.
