Period Late Period

Alloy: iron
Where Cut: cross section of tang
How Mounted: cross-section mounted cut side up
Structure:
Metallographic description: Pearlite near some edges, ferrite in the middle and along a few edges. In the densest pearlite the carbon content is ~.05%. In this cross-section view, the slag stringers are just dots. At 600x the pearlite shows evidence of partial spheroidization (lamellar plates become round dots), which indicates that this was either held several hours just below the pearlite transformation temperature or reheated to this temperature for several hours.
